Chapter Six

“Steam? That seems highly unfair when two of my three showers today have been cold.”

Riley opened her eyes and smiled as Mackenzie walked toward her across the courtyard. “Cargo pants and a collarless shirt, someone’s grounded.”

“I’m completely off rotation the next few days until a proper Psi scan and evaluation are in.” He touched his shoulder holster. “I get to play bodyguard without all the paperwork. It’s relaxing.”

“And it happened on your day off, so it’s like extra vacation time.” She turned off the water. “Should I apologize again for the cold shower, or did you come to suggest I take my nice, hot showers indoors?”

He picked up her towel and held it open. “Neither, but you never have explained why you shower out here instead of in the twenty-thousand dollar, multi-head, steam shower with the full three-side-surround of wall-mounted body sprayers and all other wonderful things I’ve heard to give me shower envy. I’ve never thought about it in perspective, but exhibitionism isn’t enough to give up that kind of luxury.”

“No, it’s not,” she agreed and ran her hands through her hair, pushing the water out to run in rivulets down her body. “I love our en suite bath, it’s my own private mini-spa and the shower is amazing. It’s also built for a group and is so big I get lonely when I shower by myself.” She stepped into the towel he held out, tucked it into place, and smiled at the modest little spot with its slip-proof tile work and teak shower bench. “I like being out here under the rain showerhead with the heat of the water competing with the coolness of the breeze. It’s like making love to Torrin and Quintus if they could both touch every part of me at once.”

He cleared his throat. “That is an imagery and sensation contrast that will linger in memory, to be sure.”

Riley stepped into rubber soled slippers and gestured toward an adjacent bench. “Will you sit with me for a minute?”

“I’ll sit with you for all of them.”

A very “Mackenzie answer”, the kind he’d given since they first met; clear, strong signals that left no doubt that if she was shopping, he was having a sale. Now those signals were mixed and she wanted that clarity back. As always, he waited for her to sit first. To her relief, he sat against her in their usual position, pressed together from hip to knee, his arm across the back of the bench.

“Do you remember when we first met?” she asked. “I don’t mean last year, but the very first time we met.”

“July 3rd, oh-six-thirty Central Standard Time, Lawrence, Kansas safehouse, on my first anniversary with the U.S. Marshal Service. The witness had tried to run for it. He was Psi sensitive so you had to chase him down on foot in almost one-hundred degree weather, and still managed to get him to us early and relatively unharmed. By oh-seven-thirty, I had not only seen you naked and
